what is classical pilates?

Classical Pilates is a holistic system of physical and mental conditioning created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Originally called "Contrology", it emphasises the coordination of mind, body and spirit through controlled movements, conscious concentration and engagement of the body's powerhouse.

The Classical Pilates repertoire consists of a slow, precise and structured sequence of exercises designed to improve posture, lengthen muscles, mobilise and stablise joints and build deep, functional strength at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

a bit about me..

Hi, I'm Leah - a fourth-generation Classical Pilates teacher based in Edinburgh.

My journey with Pilates began several years ago as a means of recovery following running injuries. I became a member at my local Classical studio and quickly fell in love with the original Pilates method and the positive affect it had on both my physical and mental health.

I’ve always been passionate about health and wellbeing, and I love connecting with others - I'm very much a people person. Pilates has had a transformative impact on my own life, so when the opportunity came to join my studio’s teacher training programme, it felt like a natural next step, and one that profoundly shaped both my personal and professional journey.

Over the course of a year, I completed an extensive programme to learn the full Classical repertoire on the Mat, Reformer, Wundachair, Cadillac and all other apparatus. My programme included observation hours, practice teaching hours, personal workout hours, participation in private and group sessions and additional workshops.

Since qualifying, I’ve been teaching across various studios in Scotland, gaining valuable experience and connecting with a wide range of people. What I love most is helping others experience the same positive changes Pilates brought to me. It’s incredibly fulfilling to support people in their own wellbeing journeys.
